Helping You Get Coverage for Your Medical Expenses

Depending on your specific injury, you may require various medical treatments, and your recovery could take time. Under Michigan law, an injured worker is entitled to necessary and reasonable care through workers’ compensation for as long as needed. However, getting the essential coverage and keeping it for as long as you need it may be challenging. This is because insurance companies try to minimize workers’ compensation benefits as much as possible.

At Steele Law, our workers’ compensation attorneys know how to build strong claims that maximize our clients’ medical and wage loss benefits.

The following includes the types of medical costs that Michigan workers’ compensation may cover:

  • Medical treatment for all reasonable and necessary medical care related to the work injury or illness, such as doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, emergency care, and prescriptions
  • Rehabilitation services, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or vocational rehabilitation, to help you recover and return to work
  • Chiropractic treatments
  • Durable medical equipment, such as crutches, wheelchairs, braces, or prosthetics
  • Nursing care
  • Dental services for injuries to the teeth and gums
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel expenses to and from medical appointments
  • Specialist care, such as orthopedic surgeons or neurologists, if required for your injury
  • Mental health services, such as counseling or psychiatric care, may be covered if the injury or illness has led to psychological issues
  • Home modifications may be covered in cases of severe injury, such as wheelchair ramps

Do not stop medical care prematurely. If you do, the insurance company may stop your coverage and claim you are no longer injured.

Insurance companies use gaps in treatment as grounds for denying continued medical benefits. If you have questions about these matters, our attorneys can help. You can also see our overview of denied workers’ comp claims to learn more.

How Much Does Workers’ Comp Pay For Lost Wages In Michigan?

In Michigan, wage loss benefits are calculated based on how much your work ability has been diminished, and how much you were making prior to your injury.

  • Unable to work at all: If you are unable to return to work at all, your benefits will be calculated based on 80% of your pre-injury wages. However, depending on the year you were injured, there may be a different maximum amount you are able to collect. Our attorneys can help you determine the maximum available benefit, based on your specific situation.
  • Able to work in a limited capacity: If you are able to continue working in a reduced capacity, you will be allowed to collect 80% of the difference between what you were taking home prior to your injury, and what you are currently earning. For example, if you were taking home $900 per week prior to your injury, but now you are only taking home $500, you will be able to collect 80% of the $400 you have lost ($320).

Why Work With A Michigan Workers’ Compensation Attorney?

Most employers carry workers’ compensation insurance, but insurance companies always look for ways to reduce or deny the benefits paid to injured workers. In other cases, benefits are denied because there are errors or not enough medical documentation in the filing. At Steele & Ferguson, P.C., our workers’ compensation attorneys can help you file a strong claim — and fight back if the insurance company tries to deny your benefits.
